How do you like me now? What do you think of the New JC Penney?

I have been keeping an eye on the re-branding of JCP the past several months and this morning I noticed that their stock price, market share and positioning is taking some heat in the news.  Apparently the re-branding efforts are not paying off yet, and that has some worried.

I don’t intend to get into the stock price, but I will say, that if JCP wanted to stay alive, or at least be relevant – they had to do something. Doing nothing seemed sure death.

With this in mind, I thought I would share a pdf of my observations on some of their re-branding efforts, which I personally applaud. And I say, give it time. With all of us going to on-line shopping practices it begs the question – will our kids laugh at the idea of going to a store?

If there is a future for on-site, in-store, traditional retail shopping , then JCP may have just stepped up their game enough to be relevant again.

Their goal it appears -is to attract the new, younger, hipper, digital shopping generation – but may be coming at the cost of losing some of the traditional shopper.

Maybe that is the point.

Whatever the case may be, they are going for it.

See slide show below.

Is this post part of the problem? Are you part of the problem?

The internet is growing at the rate none of us really has a handle on and it seems it is only increasing.

WAIT! You mean someone does have a handle on it?

I just watched a video that was rather interesting – check out Vint Cert – and his simplified but informative message – What if the INTERNET RAN OUT OF ROOM?

As a related topic – I ask – Are you addicted to the web? You may want to read this if you are on Facebook a LOT!!

Thanks to TechJournal for the great info-graphic.

How do they put the yellow “1st and 10” line on the football field of NFL games?

As a football fan (OK huge GreenBay Packers fan) and one who has been in the creative, computer and entertainment space for some time I am sometimes asked how do they put that yellow line on the football field to show where the 1st down is?

As if my limited knowledge of computer graphics would know – which it doesn’t.

In fact, this actually has baffled me for some time and it seemed much more complicated than simply ‘keying’ the color as they do during a weather cast with a map.

Well, it is much more complicated. I just read this article which tells the many components and steps it takes to present the “1st and 10” line.

Flipping classrooms, hybrid learning and the future of global education.

20 years ago or so, print publishing changed, typesetting, film seperations and many other processes that took many people to achieve was now shifting over to a little personal computer and putting the power into the hands of anyone with the skills.

15 years ago or so, music publishing changed, MP3 file compression and file sharing put the power of distribution of content into everyone’s hands. For better or worse.

10 years ago or so, video publishing changed, YouTube, MySpace, Vimeo, Google and now Hulu, Netflix and many more offer video streaming. And once again the creationg and distribution of content is available to nearly anyone with the skills and acccess.

On line shopping, mail service, and the list goes on have all been transformed by the digital revolution not unlike the industrial revolution.

Education is next.

The thrust of energy and access to on-line, virtual learning tools is putting publishing of educational content to the masses and creating a level playing field to many. It is also forcing educators from Pre-K to Post Graduate to re-think their models.

Interstingly, those creating the educational models of the future may not have a revenue model to sustain the process. This is what the newspaper industry struggled with initially, and once the content is out for free, or reliant on ad based revenue, it may be too late.

Here are just a few recent articles and resources.

Social Media and Education – Oh what to do…

Consider a small district with a half dozen schools, some administrators, a hundred teachers and a thousand parents or so.

Start a topic or issue and you have a meeting to for discussion. Leadership plans it out, makes recommendations, stakeholders weigh in and issue moves forward. Right?

Now – consider a massive school district, 800 schools, 70,000 staff, 600,000 students, a million parents – AND inject social media into the dialogue of a topic.

Need some guidelines on social media for school? Here’s a start.
